Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common type of urinary incontinence in women?
Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type in recent U.S. population data. Among women with urinary incontinence, 37.5% had stress urinary incontinence, 31.3% had mixed symptoms and 22.0% had urgency urinary incontinence. [1] The important point is that the type of leakage helps guide the treatment, which is why Dr. Bawa evaluates the pattern rather than treating every woman the same way.
Why do I leak urine when I cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise?
That pattern is usually stress urinary incontinence. Pressure rises suddenly inside the abdomen during coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, running or jumping, and the continence mechanism cannot fully compensate. Even occasional leakage is worth discussing if it is changing how you exercise, dress or live.
Why do I suddenly have to pee and cannot hold it?
This can be urgency urinary incontinence, which involves a sudden, difficult-to-control need to urinate followed by leakage. Some women have urgency alone, while others have both urgency and stress leakage, called mixed urinary incontinence. Because urgency can have different causes, the treatment should be based on what is driving it rather than the symptom alone.
Can perimenopause or menopause cause bladder leakage?
Yes. Hormonal changes can be part of the picture. Declining estrogen during perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause can affect the vagina, urethra and bladder and may contribute to urinary urgency, frequency and other genitourinary symptoms. [7]
But not every woman with urinary incontinence has the same cause. Local vaginal estrogen may improve certain urinary symptoms in appropriate postmenopausal women, while systemic hormone therapy should be individualized based on the woman, her symptoms and the specific type of hormone therapy being considered. [8] Dr. Bawa evaluates the entire picture rather than assuming every bladder symptom is hormonal.
Can I have urinary incontinence if I have never had children?
Absolutely. You do not have to have been pregnant or given birth to develop urinary incontinence. Pelvic-floor dysfunction, hormonal changes, aging, weight changes, chronic coughing or constipation, certain medications, neurologic conditions and changes in the tissues that support the bladder can all contribute.
That is why Dr. Bawa does not assume bladder leakage is simply a “post-baby” problem—or something you should accept as you get older. If you are leaking, there is a reason. The goal is to find it and treat it appropriately.
Why are Kegels not fixing my bladder leakage?
Kegels depend on voluntary pelvic-floor contractions, correct technique and repeated effort over time. They may help a little, but they cannot reproduce the intensity and repeated muscle recruitment available with advanced BawaTone® electromagnetic pelvic-floor stimulation in a treatment session. In a 2026 randomized trial, adding high-intensity focused electromagnetic therapy to supervised pelvic-floor exercises produced greater improvements in several measures than exercises alone. [6] And if your leakage also involves tissue, hormonal or other changes, strengthening the pelvic floor alone may not address everything that is contributing.
Can urinary incontinence affect sex and intimacy?
Yes. Urinary incontinence can affect desire, confidence, sexual satisfaction and willingness to have sex. [4] Women may worry about leaking, odor, a partner noticing or simply losing control during an intimate moment. Those concerns are medical and emotional—not something you should feel ashamed to discuss.
Is it common to leak urine during penetration?
Yes, and it is much more common than many women realize. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found that among women with urinary incontinence, the estimated prevalence of leakage during penetration was 50.5%. [2] If this is happening to you, you are far from alone, and it is a valid reason to seek treatment.
Can urinary incontinence be treated without surgery?
Yes. There are multiple nonsurgical ways to treat urinary incontinence, and the right approach depends on what is actually causing the leakage. At Bawa Medical, Dr. Bawa may combine treatments to address pelvic-floor weakness, tissue changes, hormones and other contributing factors rather than relying on a single therapy. The goal is to improve function and treat the underlying problem with the least invasive approach that makes sense for you.
Can urinary incontinence be cured?
Some women can achieve major improvement or complete resolution of leakage, while others need ongoing management. The answer depends on the type of urinary incontinence, its severity and what is causing it. That is why identifying the underlying problem is more useful than promising one universal treatment for every woman.
How much does urinary incontinence treatment cost?
Cost depends on what is causing the leakage and which combination of treatments Dr. Bawa recommends. A woman who needs pelvic-floor treatment alone may have a different plan from someone who also needs significant hormonal treatment. Bawa Medical offers financing and payment-plan options for qualified patients because money should not be the reason a woman keeps living with something that is affecting her confidence, activity or relationship.
