Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about prostate health, screening timelines, and symptom management.
Why did sex suddenly start hurting when it never did before?

If sex suddenly becomes painful after years of being comfortable, something has changed. Hormonal shifts, medications, breastfeeding, infection, pelvic floor dysfunction or vaginal dryness can all be responsible.

Why does it hurt when penetration first starts?

Pain at the vaginal opening may feel like burning, tearing, extreme tightness or as though something is blocking penetration. The location of the pain helps narrow down whether the problem involves the vulva, vaginal opening, pelvic floor or surrounding tissue.

Why does deep penetration hurt?

Deep pain is different from pain at the vaginal opening. Position and depth can play a role, but persistent deep pain may also be associated with pelvic floor dysfunction, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, adhesions or other pelvic conditions.

Why can’t I use a tampon or sex toy?

Vaginismus can make inserting a tampon, finger or sex toy extremely painful or even impossible. Pelvic floor tightening, scar tissue or vaginal narrowing may also contribute. For some women, difficulty with insertion begins long before they attempt penetrative sex.

Can anxiety or trauma contribute to vaginismus?

Yes. Vaginismus involves involuntary physical tightening of the pelvic floor, but fear, anxiety, trauma or anticipation of pain can contribute to the response. Sometimes a painful physical experience begins the cycle and the body continues to tighten in anticipation of penetration.

Why does sex hurt during perimenopause or menopause?

Falling estrogen can lead to genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Vaginal and vulvar tissue can become drier, thinner, less elastic and more fragile, while natural lubrication may decrease and the vaginal opening can become tighter.
These changes can cause burning, tearing, irritation and pain with penetration. They may begin during perimenopause and become more pronounced after menopause, especially if vaginal and vulvar tissue changes are not addressed.

Why does sex hurt after having a baby?

Childbirth can leave tears, episiotomy scars or pelvic floor changes, while breastfeeding can lower estrogen and contribute to vaginal dryness. Painful sex can also occur after a C-section because pregnancy itself affects hormones and the pelvic floor.

Can lichen sclerosus make sex painful?

Yes. Lichen sclerosus can cause fragile skin, tearing, inflammation, scarring and narrowing around the vaginal opening, which can make penetration very painful. We can treat it so there is no reason to live in pain.

Can breast cancer treatment cause painful sex?

Yes. Chemotherapy, surgical menopause and medication-induced menopause from estrogen-blocking therapies can all cause significant vaginal dryness, GSM and changes in vaginal and vulvar tissue. These changes can make penetration painful and may continue long after active cancer treatment ends.
Life after cancer should include getting your sex life back, too.

Can painful sex be treated without surgery?

Yes. The Bawa Method is a non-surgical, individualized approach that focuses on identifying and treating the underlying causes of painful sex. Because those causes are different for every woman, Dr. Bawa creates a treatment protocol based on what is actually making sex hurt.

How much does treatment for painful sex cost?

There is no single price because there is no one-size-fits-all treatment for painful sex. At Bawa Medical in Boca Raton, Dr. Bawa takes the time to find the root cause and then curates an individualized treatment plan based on what your body actually needs. Cost depends on that personalized approach, and financing and payment options are available.

Where can I get treatment for painful sex in South Florida?

Dr. Kanwal Bawa treats painful sex (dyspareunia), vaginismus, GSM and related sexual-health concerns at Bawa Medical in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County. Patients travel from throughout South Florida, across the United States and internationally, and a virtual consultation with Dr. Bawa can be a first step for those traveling to Bawa Medical.
