Frequently Asked Questions
Can a woman's sex life get better after cancer?
Yes. Cancer can affect sexual function in many different ways, and many of those problems can be addressed. The first step is determining what changed—such as hormones, vaginal tissue, blood flow, sensation, pelvic-floor function, pain or libido—and treating those issues individually. Dr. Bawa curates a treatment plan that makes sense for each woman.
Why is sex painful after cancer?
Painful sex after cancer may result from vaginal dryness, thinning tissue, reduced elasticity, menopause, scar tissue, pelvic-floor dysfunction, surgery, radiation, or more. Pelvic radiation can also shorten or narrow the vagina. Treatment at Bawa Medical depends on the cause rather than simply masking the pain.
Why did I lose my sex drive after chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy can affect ovarian function and hormone levels and may cause temporary or permanent menopause. Fatigue, medications, sleep disruption, pain and the emotional effects of cancer treatment can also decrease desire.
Can breast cancer treatment affect sex even though breast cancer is not a pelvic cancer?
Yes. About 70% of breast cancer survivors experience sexual dysfunction. [1] In a recent breast cancer survivor survey, 86% reported decreased interest in sex, 78% vaginal dryness, 69% decreased arousal, 59% painful sex and 41% difficulty with orgasm. [13]
Chemotherapy, hormone-blocking therapy, ovarian suppression and treatment-induced menopause can affect hormones, blood flow, vaginal tissue, sensation and sexual response—even though the cancer itself was not in the pelvis.
Can tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors cause sexual problems?
They can. Hormone-blocking treatment may contribute to vaginal dryness, painful sex, menopausal symptoms and reduced sexual desire. In one study of breast cancer survivors taking aromatase inhibitors, 39% reported vaginal dryness and 29% reported pain with intercourse. [8]
Can I use hormones after breast cancer?
Possibly. More women with a history of breast cancer—including estrogen-positive breast cancer—are now able to consider certain hormone treatments. In particular, recent large studies have found reassuring safety data for low-dose vaginal estrogen, which can be very effective for vaginal dryness, tissue changes and painful sex. [10,11]
Dr. Bawa evaluates each woman individually and coordinates care with her oncologist when appropriate.
What if hormones are not right for me after breast cancer?
You still have treatment options. Dr. Bawa can use non-hormonal approaches, including BawaRF®, BawaWave®, the BawaShot®, BawaTone® and CO₂ laser treatments, to address vaginal tissue, blood flow, sensation, painful sex, pelvic-floor function and urinary symptoms.
At the same time, newer research is finding that certain hormone therapies—especially low-dose vaginal estrogen—may be safer for more breast cancer survivors than previously thought. [10,11]
Can cancer treatment affect my ability to orgasm?
Yes. Changes in hormones, blood flow, nerves, genital sensation, pelvic-floor function, medications and pain can all interfere with orgasm. Desire, arousal and orgasm are all important components of sexual health after cancer.
Can pelvic radiation make the vagina shorter or narrower?
Yes. Pelvic radiation can cause scarring and loss of elasticity that can shorten or narrow the vagina. Surgery can also change vaginal anatomy. These changes can affect sex and may make pelvic examinations uncomfortable.
Why am I leaking urine after cancer treatment?
Hormonal changes, surgery, radiation and pelvic-floor dysfunction may all contribute to urinary symptoms after cancer. These problems can occur even after cancers outside the pelvis. Dr. Bawa evaluates urinary leakage together with pelvic-floor and sexual function rather than assuming it is unrelated.
Do I have to be sexually active to benefit from treatment?
No. Vaginal and vulvar tissue health, pelvic-floor strength, urinary control, blood flow and comfort matter whether or not you are currently sexually active.
Can you help preserve my hair after cancer?
Yes. Bawa Medical offers both hair preservation and hair restoration. Treatment may include HydraFacial Keravive®, PRFM with scalp microneedling, laser hair-growth therapy, prescription or over-the-counter topical treatments, oral medications when appropriate and targeted supplements. The treatment plan depends on why the hair is thinning and how much hair remains.
Can you restore hair that has already been lost?
In many women, there are options to improve thinning and stimulate additional growth. Dr. Bawa evaluates the scalp, pattern of loss, cancer treatment history, hormonal factors and other potential causes before developing a treatment plan.
Why did I gain weight after cancer treatment?
Cancer treatment does not always cause weight loss. Many women gain weight during or after treatment. Menopause, hormonal changes, medications, loss of muscle, reduced activity, sleep disruption and metabolic changes may all contribute.
Can I take semaglutide or tirzepatide after cancer?
These medications may be appropriate for some cancer survivors but are not right for everyone. Dr. Bawa reviews the woman's cancer history, current health, medications and individual risk factors before recommending GLP-1 treatment or another medical weight-loss option.
Can you help with loose skin or changes in my body after cancer?
Yes. Bawa Medical offers multiple body contouring, muscle stimulation and skin-tightening options. Treatment is individualized based on what has changed and what the woman wants to improve.
How much does treatment for sexual changes after cancer cost?
Treatment varies because every cancer survivor has a different medical history and combination of symptoms. Dr. Bawa first determines what has changed and which treatments are appropriate. Bawa Medical offers financing and payment options because cost should not prevent a woman from exploring treatment.
I live outside Florida. Can I start with a virtual consultation?
Yes. A private virtual consultation with Dr. Bawa is an excellent first step for women traveling from outside South Florida. Dr. Bawa can review your cancer history, symptoms and goals before determining whether an in-office treatment plan is appropriate.
