Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about prostate health, screening timelines, and symptom management.
Is premature ejaculation normal?

Occasionally finishing sooner than expected is common and does not necessarily mean you have PE. Consistently ejaculating sooner than desired, feeling unable to delay ejaculation, or experiencing distress or reduced confidence should not be accepted.

How common is premature ejaculation?

In a major multinational survey, 24% of participating U.S. men reported low or absent control over ejaculation that caused distress for them, their partner, or both. Only 9% of men with PE in that survey had consulted a physician about it. [1]

How quickly does ejaculation have to occur to be considered premature ejaculation?

There is no single number that defines premature ejaculation for every man. Lifelong PE is commonly associated with ejaculation before or within about one minute of penetration, while acquired PE usually involves a significant and bothersome decrease from a man’s previous timing, often to about three minutes or less. [4] The bigger question is whether you can delay ejaculation when you want to and whether the problem is affecting your confidence, satisfaction, or relationship.

How long should a man last?

There is no medically required duration. In a multinational stopwatch study, the median time from vaginal penetration to ejaculation was about 5.4 minutes. [6] In a separate stopwatch study, women took an average of about 13.4 minutes to reach orgasm, and longer for the women who have difficulty orgasming. [12] The goal is not to compete with a number; it is greater control, communication, and mutual satisfaction.

What is the difference between lifelong and acquired PE?

Lifelong PE has been present since a man’s earliest sexual experiences and occurs during most or nearly all encounters. Acquired PE begins after a period of better control and should prompt evaluation for changes in erection quality, medications, thyroid or prostate health, pelvic symptoms, anxiety, or other medical factors.

Why do I finish so fast?

There is seldom a single reason. Lifelong PE may involve sensitivity, neurological signaling, arousal regulation, genetics, and the ejaculation reflex, while acquired PE may be associated with ED, pelvic-floor dysfunction, medical conditions, medication changes, anxiety, or relationship stress. The important question is what is driving the pattern in you.

How can I last longer in bed?

Lasting longer starts with understanding why you are finishing too quickly. Dr. Bawa uses the Bawa Method to identify what is driving the problem and may combine BawaWave®, BawaRF®, BawaShot®, testosterone/HRT, DSF.me® supplements, and targeted behavioral or pelvic-floor strategies to improve control, confidence, and sexual function. Book a virtual or in-office consultation with Dr. Bawa to find out what is causing your PE and which treatment approach is right for you.

Can anxiety or performance anxiety cause premature ejaculation?

Yes. Anxiety can increase tension, urgency, and hyperfocus on performance, making control more difficult. But anxiety should not automatically be assumed to be the only cause; physical and medical factors should be evaluated too.

What is the connection between erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation?

The two conditions frequently overlap. Some men with ED rush because they fear losing the erection, while PE can create enough pressure and anxiety to make erections less reliable. Men with PE have nearly four times the odds of also experiencing ED. [2]

Can low testosterone cause premature ejaculation?

Low testosterone is not considered the main cause of most PE, but it can affect libido, energy, mood, confidence, and erection quality. Dr. Bawa believes knowing and optimizing your hormone levels is an important part of protecting sexual function and your SexSpan®, whether or not low testosterone is directly causing your PE.

Can diabetes, thyroid problems, or prostate problems contribute to PE?

Yes, particularly when PE is acquired. Diabetes can affect nerves, circulation, and erection quality; thyroid dysfunction and prostate or pelvic inflammation can also be associated with changes in ejaculatory control. A sudden change deserves medical evaluation.

Can medications cause premature ejaculation?

Certain medications or medication changes can affect arousal, erection quality, nervous-system signaling, and ejaculation. Do not discontinue a prescribed medication on your own. A detailed medication review is always part of your virtual or in-office consultation with Dr. Kanwal Bawa.

Can premature ejaculation be treated or cured?

Many men experience meaningful improvement when the contributing factors are identified and addressed. Acquired PE may improve significantly when an underlying issue is treated, while lifelong PE may require ongoing management. Either way, treatment can improve control, confidence, timing, and satisfaction.

Do antidepressants help premature ejaculation?

Certain serotonin-based medications can delay ejaculation in some men and are recognized treatment options for PE. [5] However, they may also cause reduced libido, erection problems, delayed or absent orgasm, and reduced sensation. [9]
At Bawa Medical, medication is not the foundation of treatment. Dr. Bawa focuses on identifying what is driving the PE and improving sexual function more comprehensively, rather than simply delaying ejaculation at the expense of desire, erections, sensation, or orgasm.

Are numbing sprays and creams safe?

Topical anesthetics can help some men delay ejaculation, but too much can cause excessive numbness, reduced pleasure, erection difficulty, irritation, or unwanted numbness in a partner. [8] At Bawa Medical, the goal is to improve control without unnecessarily sacrificing sensation or pleasure.

Do sildenafil, tadalafil, TriMix, BiMix, or QuadMix treat premature ejaculation?

No. Sildenafil, tadalafil, other PDE5 inhibitors, and penile injections do not treat PE or correct its underlying causes. They may provide temporary erectile support for some men when ED is also present, but the underlying sexual-health problem still needs to be addressed. Combining tadalafil with other ED therapies has not been established as safe and effective in all circumstances. [11]

Can BawaWave®, BawaRF®, or BawaShot® help premature ejaculation?

These treatments may be incorporated into a personalized plan when PE occurs alongside unreliable erections, poor circulation, erectile tissue changes, or performance anxiety. BawaWave®, BawaRF®, and BawaShot® are proprietary treatments that form a core part of the Bawa Method, allowing Dr. Bawa to address sexual function more comprehensively rather than focusing on ejaculation timing alone.

Can behavioral techniques help premature ejaculation?

Yes. Edging, start-and-stop training, the squeeze technique, slower pacing, breathing, relaxation, and improved awareness of rising arousal can help some men develop better control. These strategies may work best when combined with treatment of contributing physical or psychological factors.

Can pelvic-floor treatment help premature ejaculation?

Yes, but treatment must match the problem. Some men need strengthening and coordination, while others have an overly tight pelvic floor and need relaxation rather than more Kegels. Pelvic-floor muscle training may help selected men with PE. [7]

Can pornography cause premature ejaculation?

Pornography does not physically damage the ejaculation reflex and should not automatically be blamed for PE. Rapid stimulation habits, performance pressure, or unrealistic expectations may affect arousal patterns or confidence in some men, but medical and physical causes should not be overlooked.

Do condoms help premature ejaculation?

Thicker or desensitizing condoms can reduce sensation and may help some men last longer temporarily. They do not correct what is causing PE, and reducing sensation can also reduce pleasure.

Can circumcision or surgery fix premature ejaculation?

Circumcision is not a reliable treatment for PE. Sensitivity may increase, decrease, or remain unchanged after circumcision, and studies have not shown that circumcision consistently improves ejaculatory control. [10]
Surgery is not routinely recommended for PE. Bawa Medical focuses on personalized, non-surgical treatment strategies that address what is actually contributing to the problem.

When should I see a doctor about premature ejaculation?

Consider an evaluation with Dr. Bawa if you finish sooner than you want, cannot reliably delay ejaculation, have experienced a sudden change, avoid intimacy because of anxiety, or also have ED, pelvic symptoms, urinary symptoms, or signs of hormone imbalance. You do not need to and should not wait until PE has significantly affected your relationship or confidence.

Which premature ejaculation treatment is right for me?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer at Bawa Medical. The right plan depends on whether PE is lifelong or acquired, your erection quality, medical history, previous treatments, hormone and metabolic health, pelvic-floor function, anxiety, and personal goals. Dr. Bawa uses the Bawa Method to combine and sequence treatments when appropriate.

Do I have to travel to Bawa Medical for premature ejaculation treatment?

You can start with a private virtual or in-office consultation with Dr. Bawa. DSF.me® supplements can be ordered from anywhere in the world, while men who travel to Bawa Medical in Boca Raton can access the full range of in-office Bawa Method treatments and personalized combination protocols. Patients travel from across the United States and internationally for this specialized care.

How much does premature ejaculation treatment cost, and do you offer financing?

Treatment is personalized, so cost depends on what you actually need. Bawa Medical offers multiple financing options and flexible payment plans, and laboratory testing is often covered by health insurance. A virtual or in-office consultation with Dr. Bawa allows you to understand your options and expected costs before beginning treatment.
