Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about prostate health, screening timelines, and symptom management.
What is considered low testosterone in men?

A total testosterone level below approximately 300 ng/dL is commonly used as a laboratory threshold, but a man is more than a number. Dr. Bawa also considers symptoms, sexual function, medications, testing conditions, overall health, fertility goals, and why the testosterone level is low before recommending treatment.
Schedule a private virtual or in-office consultation if you have been told that your testosterone is normal, but you still do not feel or function like yourself.

Can I have low testosterone without symptoms?

Yes. You can have low testosterone without noticing any obvious symptoms. In one study, 48% of men over age 50 with low testosterone had no associated symptoms. [2]
Risk factors, subtle changes in sexual function, medical history, and correctly timed testing still matter. Schedule a private virtual or in-office consultation with Dr. Bawa to review your risk factors and determine whether hormone testing should be part of your evaluation.

What are the first signs of low testosterone?

Early signs can include lower sexual desire or low libido, fewer or softer morning erections, fatigue, reduced motivation, poor exercise recovery, loss of strength, increased abdominal fat, and less reliable sexual performance. Because these symptoms can have several causes, a complete hormone and sexual health evaluation is more useful than trying to diagnose yourself from a checklist.

How early can testosterone begin declining?

Testosterone can begin declining gradually during a man's early 30s. The drop varies, and weight, sleep, medications, illness, stress, diabetes, physical activity, and other health factors can influence it. [5] Meaningful symptoms should not be dismissed simply because a man is considered too young to have a hormonal problem.

Can low testosterone cause erectile dysfunction?

Yes. Low testosterone can reduce desire, spontaneous erections, and sexual responsiveness, but it is not the only cause of erectile dysfunction. Blood flow, diabetes, vascular disease, nerves, medications, erectile-tissue health, Peyronie's disease, sleep, and performance anxiety may also contribute. Schedule a private virtual or in-office sexual-function consultation with Dr. Bawa to determine whether the problem is hormonal, vascular, tissue-related, neurological, psychological, or a combination.

Will testosterone treatment fix erectile dysfunction?

Testosterone treatment can often improve sexual function when low testosterone is part of the problem, but it cannot unblock a blood vessel or correct every cause of erectile dysfunction. Persistent ED is treated with a personalized combination that may include BawaWave®, BawaRF®, BawaShot®, medical weight loss, DSF.me® supplement support, medication review, and other treatments selected for the underlying problem.

Can low testosterone cause low libido?

Yes. Low testosterone is an important cause of low libido and reduced sexual desire in men. Low libido can also be caused by thyroid dysfunction, elevated prolactin, medications, depression, poor sleep, relationship or other stress, chronic illness, or other hormonal concerns. A private virtual or in-office consultation with Dr. Bawa can identify what is affecting your desire and which treatment protocol is most likely to improve it.

What is the best time of day to test testosterone?

For men with a typical daytime schedule, testosterone is generally tested between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Men who work nights or sleep during the day should generally test within approximately 3 hours of waking from their main sleep period. Tell Dr. Bawa about your sleep schedule so the result can be timed and interpreted correctly. [9]

Should I fast before a testosterone test?

Yes. For the most accurate baseline, fast for 8 to 12 hours before your blood draw. Do not eat at any point during that fasting period, because eating can temporarily lower total testosterone and make a normal level appear low. In one study, the largest individual decline after a mixed meal was 56%. [10]
Plain water is allowed. Avoid coffee, tea, juice, flavored water, gum, and all food during the fast, especially when glucose, insulin, cholesterol, or other metabolic tests are being performed at the same time.

Which medications can lower testosterone?

Opioids, corticosteroids, certain psychiatric medications, some cancer treatments, and medications that raise prolactin can lower testosterone production. External testosterone, anabolic steroids, hCG, DHEA, prohormones, and bodybuilding products can also alter the result or make it difficult to determine your natural baseline. [7][8] Tell Dr. Bawa about everything you take, but do not stop prescribed medication unless instructed to do so.

Does one low testosterone result mean I need TRT?

No. The result must be interpreted according to the time of testing, sleep, fasting status, medications, recent illness, prior hormone use, symptoms, and overall health. Dr. Bawa determines whether the result accurately reflects your usual hormone level and whether additional testing or testosterone treatment is appropriate.

Is injectable testosterone a good treatment?

Yes. Injectable testosterone is an important and effective treatment option when it is individually dosed, monitored, and adjusted. Common forms include Depo-Testosterone® (testosterone cypionate) and Xyosted® (testosterone enanthate). Dr. Bawa adjusts treatment according to symptoms, hormone levels, hematocrit, blood pressure, PSA, fertility goals, sexual function, and overall health.

What if I do not absorb topical testosterone?

Some men do not absorb AndroGel® (testosterone gel) or other topical products reliably. That does not mean pellets are the only alternative. Injectable testosterone can be adjusted and monitored without leaving a fixed implanted dose beneath the skin. Schedule a private virtual or in-office consultation to review the available treatment options.

Why does Dr. Bawa not recommend testosterone pellets?

Dr. Bawa does not recommend pellets because they are invasive and difficult to adjust after insertion. If testosterone becomes too high or remains too low, the dose cannot be readily changed. Repeated insertion can also cause bruising, bleeding, infection, pain, fibrosis, scarring, firm nodules, tissue damage, and pellet extrusion. [11] Dr. Bawa prefers treatment that can be fine-tuned as the man's needs change.

Does testosterone treatment affect fertility?

Exogenous testosterone can suppress the signals that maintain natural testosterone production inside the testicles and support sperm production. [8] Men who want children now or later should discuss fertility before starting TRT. Dr. Bawa can evaluate natural testosterone support, fertility-conscious prescription options, semen testing, and individualized monitoring during a private virtual or in-office consultation.

How does testosterone relate to male fertility?

A healthy testosterone level produced naturally by the body is necessary for normal sperm production. The fertility concern is external testosterone, which can suppress the signals required to maintain testosterone inside the testicles and support sperm production.

Does Dr. Bawa’s DSF.me testosterone booster Renew® affect fertility?

Renew® contains no external testosterone or exogenous hormone. It supports the body's own testosterone production and does not suppress hormone signaling through the same known mechanism as TRT. It can therefore be an important option for men who want to support natural testosterone production while remaining mindful of fertility. Men actively trying to conceive should discuss their complete supplement and hormone plan with Dr. Bawa during a private virtual or in-office consultation.

Can Renew® replace testosterone injections?

Renew® can support natural testosterone production and may be an important part of a complete treatment plan. It will not replace testosterone in every situation. Men with significant testicular failure, pituitary disease, or another permanent cause of testosterone deficiency may require prescription replacement. Dr. Bawa determines whether Renew®, injectable testosterone, treatment of an underlying cause, or a combination is best.

Can thyroid disease feel like low testosterone?

Yes. Thyroid dysfunction can cause fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, low libido, mood changes, and sexual dysfunction. This is why Dr. Bawa evaluates related hormonal concerns rather than assuming every symptom comes from testosterone.

Can low vitamin D cause low-testosterone symptoms?

Low vitamin D can overlap with fatigue, poor muscle health, low mood, and reduced bone health. Vitamin D deficiency should be corrected when present, but vitamin D alone should not be presented as a guaranteed treatment for low testosterone.

Can sleep apnea affect testosterone and sexual function?

Yes. Sleep apnea can disrupt hormone production, worsen fatigue and metabolic health, and contribute to erectile dysfunction and low libido. Men who snore loudly, stop breathing during sleep, wake with headaches, or remain exhausted during the day should schedule a private virtual or in-office consultation to discuss appropriate evaluation.

Is testosterone treatment lifelong?

Not always. The answer depends on why testosterone is low. Permanent testicular or pituitary problems may require long-term treatment. Low testosterone related to medications, weight, illness, sleep apnea, previous steroid use, or another reversible cause may improve when the underlying concern is addressed. Dr. Bawa explains the likely course before treatment begins.

How quickly does low-testosterone treatment work?

Desire, energy, erections, body composition, muscle, mood, and bone health do not all change at the same rate. Dr. Bawa monitors whether treatment is producing meaningful improvement and adjusts the plan rather than continuing ineffective treatment or promising an overnight transformation.

How much does low-testosterone treatment cost?

Cost depends on laboratory testing, your treatment plan, and monitoring. Treatment may include Renew®, Dr. Bawa’s U.S.-made testosterone booster, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), and care for related sexual or metabolic concerns.
Labs are often covered by insurance, although coverage varies. A private virtual or in-office consultation with Dr. Bawa provides an individualized plan and cost estimate.

Does Bawa Medical offer financing?

Yes. Bawa Medical believes that exceptional, world-renowned care should be accessible. Financing options such as Cherry and CareCredit® are available for qualifying patients, along with flexible payment arrangements for many treatment plans. Cherry is a great way to review potential payment options without a hard credit check.
Money should not keep a man from seeking Dr. Bawa's expertise or understanding what treatment may be possible. Schedule a private virtual or in-office consultation to review the recommended care and available financing.

Can I meet Dr. Bawa virtually?

Yes. Bawa Medical offers private virtual and in-office consultations. A virtual consultation can be an efficient first step for men who live outside South Florida, want Dr. Bawa to review existing laboratory results, or need expert guidance before deciding what testing or treatment to pursue. Men travel to Bawa Medical from across the country and around the world, and virtual consultations make Dr. Bawa's expertise accessible before an in-office visit is scheduled.
