Dr. Bawa: Coming back to our topic today, I want you to start seeing your need for sex differently. Sex is fun. Sex is pleasurable. But did you know that sex is actually good for you? I am going to discuss with you 12 of many reasons why you need more sex. Some of them will shock you, so stay tuned till the very end.
Dr. Bawa: Let’s launch right in.
Reason 1: Sex Improves Libido
Dr. Bawa: 1. It improves your libido. What really is libido? It is the desire to have sex. The more sex you have, the more sex your body will crave.
Reason 2: Practice Makes You Better at Sex
Dr. Bawa: 2. The more you do, the better you get. Just like playing sports or playing the piano, practice makes you better at sex. Frequent sex with your partner will help you learn how they like to be touched. You will also learn how they want to be seduced. And here’s another benefit. Men will last longer in bed if their penis gets enough training!
Reason 3: Sex May Support Immunity
Dr. Bawa: 3. It increases your immunity. A study out of Wilkes University in Pennsylvania studied college students by asking them how often they were having sex, and then analyzing the levels of IgA in their saliva. IgA is a substance our bodies make to fight infection. Students having sex up to twice a week had 30% higher levels of the disease-fighting substance in their saliva than those not having sex. An interesting caveat is that those having sex three or more times a week actually had lower IgA levels than those not having sex at all.
Dr. Bawa: I don’t think frequent sex was the issue here. The study sample was a bunch of undergraduate students. I'm quite certain that they were having lots of sex with different people, and the more people they had sex with, the lower their immunity became. The take-home fact here is that more sex with a steady partner will keep you healthier, and less likely to get sick.
Reason 4: Sex and Heart Health
Dr. Bawa: 4. It improves heart health and lowers your risk of a heart attack. A 2010 study published in the American Journal of Cardiology followed 1165 men, and found a significant decrease in cardiovascular events for men having sex two to three times per week.
Reason 5: Better Sex, Better Sleep
Dr. Bawa: 5. You will sleep better. Sex and sleep are inextricably linked to each other. When you have sex the body releases feel-good hormones that help people relax. Poor sleep is an independent risk factor for erectile dysfunction and many other forms of sexual dysfunction. It causes low libido and arousal. It even causes infertility in both men and women. On the flip side, if you have more sex, you will sleep better which will in turn help you have better sex and higher fertility. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that women who slept better, and longer hours, had more desire for sex. So you see, sleep more for more and better sex, and have more sex for better sleep.
Reason 6: Sex and Blood Pressure
Dr. Bawa: 6. It will improve your blood pressure. Multiple studies have shown that sex lowers blood pressure. So, the more sex you have, the lower your blood pressure will be. Considering the fact that high blood pressure affects the heart, the brain, the kidneys, and more, lowering blood pressure alone will help you live longer. If nothing else convinces you to have more sex, this should.
Reason 7: Less Stress, Anxiety and Depression
Dr. Bawa: 7. You will have lower levels of stress, anxiety and depression. This is directly linked to what we just discussed. Sex lowers your stress level and makes you feel better about yourself, and life in general. The feel-good hormones like dopamine and oxytocin that course through your blood after sex reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your body. In fact, a 2005 Scottish study that looked at people’s blood pressure response to stress found that those having penile-vaginal sex had less of a spike in their blood pressure than those masturbating or having other forms of sex. Having sex improves mood, and elevates the spirit.
Reason 8: Sex Can Reduce Pain
Dr. Bawa: 8. It lowers pain. As discussed earlier in this podcast, sex releases endorphins and feel-good hormones into the body. These also help lower pain. From migraines to menstrual cramps, sex helps reduce pain everywhere.
Reason 9: Ejaculation and Prostate Cancer Risk
Dr. Bawa: 9. It decreases your risk of prostate cancer. A 2004 study published in the Journal of American Medicine titled “Ejaculation Frequency and Subsequent Risk of Prostate Cancer” looked at the relationship between ejaculation and the risk of prostate cancer. It found that men ejaculating 21 or more times per month had a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. A follow-up to this study 10 years later found the same results.
Reason 10: Sex Counts as Exercise
Dr. Bawa: 10. It counts as exercise. I am not saying that sex should be as intense as Serena Williams sweating it out at Wimbledon, but it burns calories no matter what!
Reason 11: Can Sex Make You Smarter?
Dr. Bawa: 11. Sex can make you smarter. Multiple studies around the world involving thousands of people at a time have shown that the more sex you have, the smarter you get. Couples who have regular sex perform better on cognitive testing across the board than those who have sex infrequently, or don't have sex at all. Believe it or not, regular sexual activity can actually help the brain form new neurons.
Reason 12: More Sex, More Happiness
Dr. Bawa: 12. It will make you happier, and strengthen your relationship. A 2004 study titled “Money, Sex And Happiness: An Empirical Study” sampled 16000 randomly chosen men and women. It found that increased frequency of sex was associated with more happiness, especially among highly educated people. A 2015 study out of China that sampled 3800 adults also found that couples having more sex were happier.
Dr. Bawa: An interesting fact that both studies found was that people were happiest when they had sex with one person during the previous year. Stability and trust are paramount in the sexual experience and therefore having more frequent sex with a single partner is more likely to bring happiness than playing the field.
Dr. Bawa: That said, a 2016 study out of The University of Toronto has shown that as long as couples are having sex at least once a week, increasing that won’t necessarily lead to more happiness. My take on all the research is that you need to be having sex regularly and at a frequency that works for your relationship to be happy. Trying to have sex four or five times a week isn't necessarily going to make you happier but having regular sex will.
Dr. Bawa: Happier couples have lower divorce rates, and children growing up in intact families tend to do better in life. So good sex… and more sex… is actually good for your entire family.
When Having More Sex Feels Difficult
Dr. Bawa: As you hear these twelve reasons why you need more sex you may be thinking that it is easy for me to say it but is hard for you to perform as you are getting older, or perhaps life is getting in the way. Perhaps you have just given birth. Perhaps you are menopausal. Or maybe erectile dysfunction of some sort is driving a wedge between the two of you. There are many reasons why you feel that you are unable to have sex more often.
Dr. Bawa: I am here to tell you that you no longer need to settle for less. I have the tools to help both men and women in their pursuit of sexual health and a hot sex life. Whether it is treating men who suffer from early or even late stages of erectile dysfunction or women needing a vaginal overhaul, I can help. I have many patients who came to me depressed about the state of their relationship as a whole, and their sex life in particular. I have curated treatment protocols that meet their particular needs, and the results speak for themselves. The treatments that I have performed on these couples have transformed their lives.
